Jane Kennedy, Specialist Cognitive and Behavioural Therapist working with neurodivergent young people and their families.
I am a BABCP accredited specialist Cognitive and Behavioural Therapist (CBT) working with neurodivergent children and adolescents. I am based in North London and offer face to face appointments and a limited number of on-line appointments (where appropriate).
I have a strengths-based approach which takes account of the individual profile of my clients. Most of my clients have a diagnosis of autism and/or ADHD and my approach supports a greater understanding of how this impacts their lives, both in terms of strengths and the difficulties it brings. Clients may come to therapy to gain a greater understanding of their autism/ADHD or they may be seeking help with a mental health condition such as anxiety or low mood. I use evidence based treatment approaches and work with the child or young person and their family to find the right approach for them.
I do not offer an emergency service. If you are worried about the safety of your child or adolescent please contact your GP, call your local Mental Health Crisis Line, or visit your local Accident and Emergency department.
I am fully accredited by the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapists (BABCP membership number 1003648) and am a graduate member of the British Psychological Society (MBPsS membership number 398291).
I have a Masters degree in Child and Adolescent Mental Health (from UCL) and a Post Graduate Diploma in Psychological Therapies for children and adolescents with autism (from UCL) and an undergraduate degree in psychology.
I worked previously in East London in the NHS as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist in CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services), working with neurodiverse children and adolescents and their families. I now work privately.
I lecture at UCL and the Anna Freud Centre on adapting CBT for neurodivergent children and adolescents.
I hold an enhanced DBS certificate.
I take confidentiality and data protection very seriously. Divergent Child Therapy is a service for neurodivergent children and adolescents (and their families) to access therapy (mainly CBT) that is adapted to their specific strengths and needs. Adaptations are specific to each individual and may, for example, take account of differences in information processing, social communication, sensory processing, engagement and masking.
I am based in North London and see families in a clinic there and occasionally in their own homes where this is needed. Online and/or telephone sessions can be arranged where travel distance is too far although these might not be appropriate for all children/adolescents.
I have a strengths-based approach which means that I focus on a child/adolescents' strengths whilst supporting with their difficulties. I work with families to support a greater understanding of how autism affects their child and how to make adaptations to facilitate positive change for them. I offer adapted Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) when appropriate to treat mental health conditions. I work with schools on behalf of parents, where it would help support the child. I write reports to input to EHCP applications for the children I am working with.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy based on the concept that a person's thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions are interconnected, and that negative thoughts and unhelpful behaviours can trap them in a negative cycle. Adapted CBT takes account of the child's specific autistic strengths and difficulties to make the therapy accessible to them and their specific profile of needs. Examples of adaptations include having more structured sessions, accommodations for high levels of anxiety that coming to therapy might induce, balance of verbal/visual input according the child's profile and care with language and questioning. CBT is an evidence based approach for many mental health conditions including anxiety, low mood and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).
